Stefan Kofler at the Annual GALA Global Meeting in New York

2017 Annual GALA Global Meeting

The annual GALA Global Meeting was held in New York city from March 30th to April 2nd, 2017. Lawyers from over 50 nations took part. The Global Meeting was organised by the law firm Frankfurt Kurnit Klein & Selz, New York. GALA stands for “Global Advertising Lawyers Alliance”.  It is a worldwide affiliation of lawyers specialised in advertising law. For more information see the GALA homepage.

The focus of this year’s conference was on social media advertising strategies. The liability of a company advertising using  “influencer-marketing” and “blog-marketing” was highlighted. Guest speakers Matt Miller, President of the AICP (Association of Independent Commercial Producers), Charlie Herschel, Vicepresident of American Express, Shelly Paioff, Deputy General Counsel & Head of Legal, US Taboola, Michael Plaut, General Counsel Director of Advertising Legal Services, Interpublic Group, Nicholas Vianna, Assistant Deputy General Counsel, Publicis Group, and Claudine Wilson, Senior Counsel, HBO all addressed the subject.

The reports by the individual GALA members about their national legal frameworks regarding social media advertising showed that the legal situation in the individual countries varied a great deal. Whilst in some states there are already legal stipulations covering such advertising, in most countries this was not yet the case.

The law firm Greiter Pegger Kofler & Partner is the GALA Member for Austria.
